STEM club awarded for 'Most Innovative Idea'

Our fantastic Year 7 STEM club have been awarded the 'Most Innovative Idea' award at a recent regional competition after coming up with a unique idea to make water fountains in schools cleaner.

The competition challenged students from across the region to come up with ideas to make schools healthier with the help of GlaxoSmithKlein. Our science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) club came up with a multitude of ideas such as a help button and anti-graffitti paint before settling for the idea of a water filter for school fountains.

They spent the next six weeks researching water filters, taking swabs from our fountains in school, finding out what people thought of our fountains and looking at how they could create a filter to tackle the problems faced. After the initial research phase, the STEM club produced designs and looked at the costing and suitability of the filters. All of this was then put together to produce a 25 page report and display stand to showcase their idea at the GSK event.

On Wednesday 21 June, the students presented their idea to a variety of people including other schools, staff from GSK, professional business people and members of the public at Newcastle University. The product was a huge hit and our STEM club walked away with the Most Innovative Idea trophy and a certificate each for all their hard work!

The students' idea was so impressive that some of the business people watching the presentation are interested in making it... so watch out - it could be coming your way soon!

Huge well done to our forward-thinking STEM club and to Mr Flynn and Miss Marshall who run the club (pictured)
