Our community arts and history department recently came together to take part in the Freedom to Believe project.

Four secondary schools form across the UK were invited to work alongside Talawa Theatre Company students to explore and broaden their knowledge of Caribbean social history, in particular, the history of the suppression of African-derived religions.

Ten Year 8 students were chosen to take part in the four sessions made up of exciting workshops with the Talawa Theatre Company and Dianna Paton, a lecturer from Newcastle University.

The project was a big success with Talawa Theatre Company commenting: "The first two sessions have been extremely productive and actors and directors from the theatre company have been impressed with the students ability to converse in an articulate and knowledgeable way. The students have been confident in giving a clear insight into the learning already taught in the history curriculum on Caribbean social history. The  creative work the group are producing is rich and solid".

Students from across the four schools will come together in the coming weeks to celebrate and show what they have learnt from the project - well done all!
