A group of Year 8 students visited Durham Cathedral on Holocaust Memorial Day last Friday.

They listened to a talk from Holocaust survivor Ruth Barnett who, in 1939, aged four, Ruth and her seven year old brother arrived in Britain on the Kindertransport. Over the next ten years, they lived with three foster families and in a hostel. Students were very interested to hear Ruth's testimony, and were given the chance to ask her some questions at the end.

The Holocaust was the mass murder of six million Jews and millions of other people leading up to, and during, World War II. The killings took place in Europe between 1933 and 1945. They were organised by the German Nazi party which was led by Adolf Hitler.

Year 8 students will be studying the Holocaust later this year in their history lessons, the trip was an introduction to the topic.
