Science Teacher: Miss Joynson

Miss Joynson

What did you do for the community (local, national or international)?

I volunteered at an orphanage in Tanzania, Africa, working with disabled children and babies and teaching maths to ten year olds. I worked with a doctor to diagnose people from underdeveloped villages, and dispensed medicines to them. I worked with builders to build a day care centre and provided the orphanage with new beds and farm animals. I was also involved in a "food kitchen" which distributed a meal a day to the 200 starving children.

Why did you volunteer?

To help the disadvantaged and learn about Tanzanian culture.

What have you gained from such an experience?

I learnt a new language (Swahili) and developed a love for culture, and I was privileged to work with some amazing children who had such a love for life.

Top volunteering tip: Just do it, don't hesitate!
